On Saturday I did the innaugural Phoenix Half Marathon in Mesa. Its all downhill. Well almost all. I felt a little like my legs were going to fall off but it was good fun and super fast. Almost everyone in my running group placed in their age group or overall.
In general, I have always thought running was a good way to get to know a new place. Anyone who knows me is likely sick of hearing about running. But yeah, some of my favorite places are favorites because i saw them on foot. Sedona and Paris are the current favorites. DC is the home away from home but running to the red mountain on a cold morning comes close to all of these.
It is such a very cool way to see a city or town and to meet the people in that community. You very literally see where the roads are good or bad, where trees are needed, where snow is never shovelled, and what is where. You get to know the character of each neighborhood and as I like to run in the mornings, you see the real residents doing what they really do. What are the popular bus routes or metro stops? Where do people stop to get their coffee or dry cleaning? Do people here have kids and dogs? do they carpool? are they not doing much of anything in the am?? Are they blue collar or white? Sounds pretty yuppy but then i suppose DC really was and running is in general. You get the idea tho.
In this picture the Mayor if Mesa is giving us our plaques. I sort of wanted to nerd out and tell him about the urban management stuff i was studying. Once again, running is somehow city-centric. Who knew?
I really liked reading your post! I can relate because I too love to run, unfortunately I've never participated in a marathon! Reading your post definitely makes me want to try!
ReplyDeleteI have always wanted to run in a marathon but I've never gotten around to it. After reading about your perspective on running I can't help but feel that I've missed out on so many things! Congrats on a job well done and I like your picture!
ReplyDeleteI would have never considered all these perks to running- however I totally do agree I am sure it would be an amazign way to see a city. Did you do a marathon in Paris?
ReplyDeleteEmma, congrats on your run. It must have been great to meet Mayor Smith. I love running as well. When I went to the mid west to play baseball that was how I acclimated myself to the area. Although, running in the snow and cold is not as enjoyable as running in Arizona.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree that running is a great way to learn a community. I just completed my first RagNar and got to see 200 miles of Arizona desert and city.
DeleteI also think recreational activities is a vital part of building a community. Tempe Town Lake has meets, events, races, and fairs every weekend and it makes down town Tempe such a great place to visit and be proud of.
That's a great picture! What you said about getting out there in your community and seeing what is really going is so crucial. Sometimes I feel if the big politicians were to do this things might be very different for our citizens and country.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your experience and a snapshot with us! I think it is great that you enjoy running so much. It sounds like you have seen some great places on foot!
ReplyDeleteI wish I loved runnning! I've tried so many times (running at least 10 miles a week voluntarily for a year, ROTC daily personal fitness, half-marathon) but I just can't stand it. I guess it's monotonous to me? It is such a great way to explore new places and I'm jealous of you!
