Peace Corps....

Tuesday April 24

Today I attended a briefing on the Peace Corps on main campus. I had quite a few friends consider this and even go. One friend is currently living in Morocco. She is fifty two and has two full grown children. She is a nurse but spoke no French or Arabic when she left let alone any of the local dialects. This is an incredible leap and I frankly don’t know if I have what it takes to commit two years to the great unknown. Away from friends and family and all that I know.

Here is a brief from the website:
Peace Corps service is a life-defining leadership experience. Since 1961, the Peace Corps has shared with the world America's most precious resource – its people. Volunteers serve in 75 countries in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Central America and Mexico, South America, Europe, the Pacific Islands and the Middle East. Peace Corps Volunteers live, learn, and work with a community overseas for 27 months, providing technical assistance in six program areas: education, youth and community development, health, business and information and communications technology, agriculture, and environment.

  1. I had also considered doing this but I just don't think I can do it financially. It would be great if I didn't have any other responsibilities (i.e. car payment, credit card payments, etc) so that I could do this. Good luck in deciding! :)

  2. This sounds like a great experience to have. It's always great to share these events with friends, even if they are not in the same city.

  4. Agreed it most definitely is huge leap and committment but those who do it come back with experiences and knowledge that I don't think we could have ever imagined.

  5. I've known several friends who served in the Peace Corps, and every one of them found the experience to be among the best of their lives. The contacts, the interaction with the local population, and most of all, the feeling you get when you help others. You can't go wrong with serving in the Peace Corps!

  6. I'm always impressed when people I meet have served in the Peace Corps. It's not an easy volunteer program and I can't imagine anyone not having to worry about finances back home. I'm glad there are people out there who take the leap to do good in the world.
